ISKCON

The Foundation and Growth of ISKCON.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement, was established in 1966 in New York City by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. With a mission to promote the teachings of Lord Krishna as outlined in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam, ISKCON has since evolved into a global spiritual movement. Rooted in the ancient tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, ISKCON emphasizes the practice of Bhakti-yoga, or devotional service, as the means to achieve spiritual enlightenment and connection with Krishna. Over the decades, the movement has expanded its reach, establishing temples, educational centers, and farming communities worldwide, all dedicated to fostering spiritual growth and devotion.

Global Outreach and Community Building.

ISKCON’s impact extends far beyond its physical temples. The movement actively engages in a wide range of community-building activities, including kirtan (devotional singing), public lectures, festivals, and distribution of spiritual literature. One of ISKCON’s most significant contributions to society is its food distribution program, known as Food for Life, which provides millions of free vegetarian meals to people in need around the world. This initiative reflects the movement’s core values of compassion and service. Additionally, ISKCON’s festivals, such as Ratha Yatra, draw large crowds and offer a glimpse into the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Vaishnavism, creating a sense of unity and joy among participants.

Spiritual Education and Personal Growth.

ISKCON places a strong emphasis on education as a means to nurture and develop the spiritual lives of its followers. The movement offers a variety of educational programs, from introductory courses on Krishna consciousness to in-depth studies of Vedic scriptures. By providing resources such as live classes, discussion forums, and personalized mentoring, ISKCON helps individuals integrate spiritual wisdom into their daily lives, fostering personal growth and transformation. Through these efforts, ISKCON continues to fulfill its mission of spreading the teachings of Lord Krishna and enriching the lives of people around the world.
